Kitty Magee is a woman of the Bible. Since childhood she has loved God’s Word and, eventually, the Lord called her to be a Bible teacher. You can read her story here.

I asked Kitty the other day, “What would you say to a woman who wants to learn to study the Bible?” Here is her answer:

  1. Get a translation of the Bible that is an actual translation (not a paraphrase). The New King James Version (NKJV) is an excellent translation, and the New International Version (NIV) is too.
  2. Study Bibles have some very helpful notes that can shed light on your reading. A Bible with a concordance, or a stand-alone concordance, is also a good tool. The Amplified Bible can also be a good Bible choice.
  3. Have a notebook and pen handy, and write down your questions.
  4. You can read and study with even one friend, someone you can trust with your questions.
  5. Choose a friend who is biblically based. They need to come from a position of confidence in the Bible.

The Four Questions—A Simple Bible Study

  1. Choose a short section in one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). These authors each wrote about the earthly life of Jesus and his teachings and miracles. Either Mark or Luke would be a good choice.
  2. Question 1 — What does this passage say?
  3. Question 2 — What does it mean?
  4. Question 3 — What is the Holy Spirit saying to me through this passage?
  5. Question 4 — What am I going to do about that?
  6. Ask the Holy Spirit, who is called the Spirit of Truth (John 16:13), to guide you into truth as you study. He will help you if you ask him.
  7. Use your Bible study time to write down your questions and the answers as you work through the Four Questions.
  8. If you get stuck, talk to your pastor or a friend.

If you know someone who would benefit from this simple, straightforward way to study the Bible, please pass it on. You might even offer to do it together. It could be just what she’s hungry for.

Thank you, Kitty!
